Thirty-five years of protection activity: Giovanni Falcone’s legacy lives on in the Central Protection Service

On 17 June 2026, the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Central Protection Service (SCP), a leading agency dedicated to the safety and reintegration of justice collaborators, was held at the the “Carlo Mosca” Conference Hall in the Scuola di Perfezionamento per le Forze di Polizia (SFP.

This event, opened with remarks by SFP Director, National Police Dirigente Generale Vincenzo Massimo Modeo, was attended by the leaders from the security sector, including the Undersecretary of the Interior Nicola Molteni, the Chief of Police-Director-General of Public Security Vittorio Pisani, the President of the Anti-Mafia Commission Chiara Colosimo, the Deputy Prosecutor of the DNAA Domenico Gozzo, and the Director of the SCP Giancarlo Scafuri.

The presentations illustrated the history of the Service, which was founded on the visionary insight of Judge Giovanni Falcone and has today become a cutting-edge international model that manages approximately 3,000 people, including 800 minors, as was also analyzed in depth during the subsequent workshop dedicated to the new challenges of hybrid and digital crime.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, institutional leaders paid tribute to the memory of Prefetto Antonio Manganelli, former Director of the Central Protection Service, by presenting his wife, Mrs. Adriana Piancastelli, with the commemorative publication and the book “Parole nascoste, sorrisi protetti” (Hidden Words, Protected Smiles), which focuses on psychological support for those under protection.
